Cycling in the Slochter Vrijstaat
For Ontdek Midden-Groningen, Stichting Hoop voor Hoog Hammen developed a special bicycle route to accompany the book 'In de Slochter Vrijstaat', written under the pseudonym Jutta Koolhof by Auke Hulst.
The bicycle route ‘Welcome to the Slochter Vrijstaat’ takes you back to the 1980s. This route takes you past well-known and especially lesser-known sites of the Slochter Vrijstaat, formerly known as the Dutch municipality of Slochteren and officially declared an independent gas republic in 1964. While cycling you will see this “smallest and richest country” in the world through the eyes of author Jutta Koolhof, who visited the Vrijstaat in 1984 and reported on it in her book In de Slochter Vrijstaat.
