Stepping Stones
Everyone has crossed a little river before. From one stone protruding above the water to another, and then that way to the other side. "Stepping from stone to stone." That's the way our festival REGENERATE is, too. From June 17 through December 10, you can 'hop' from one exhibition to another in our relay programming.
We began last summer in Friesland, where we presented work by 14 photographers and visual artists until September 24 in the beautiful Museum Belvédère. Until September 30, we are showing work by three artists in the small museum Opsterlân in Gorredijk. With this we introduce a way of programming, which allows us to reach a wider audience than with a short festival, in which you have to scour everything in a relatively short time, if you want to. Noorderlicht International Photo Festival is doing something new with this, because to my knowledge this has not been done before within this discipline.
Within that festival programming, we have placed two projects that stand on their own. These are Tussen Land en Lucht, which pairs work by a photographer of the past with work by a photographer of today. An important project, because this new work will soon be archival material as well. In this way, we are adding to the visual story of our society. The second is Sex Shooter – the Liberation of Sexual Identity and Gender Matters: Stories from Istanbul, a high-profile multimedia exhibition that fuels discussion about the right to be yourself.
October 7 is the next “stepping stone” of our festival. Then the exhibitions in the Akerk, Pictura, Campis and Noorderlicht Studio will open. Later there will be a presentation by two image makers in the Martinikerk in Sneek.
Then we will be on the other side, on our way to the next river!
