Unfamiliar Memories (2016-ongoing)
“I look at the idea of the personal ‘truth’, or rather the interpretation of the history through the personal view and re-enaction family stories. In the photographs, Ukrainians of different regions and beliefs are asked to reenact a scene from a family memory, which might be real or an imagined story. The details of these memories were jointly translated into charged tableaux that materialized a thought into a performance, then a photograph."
“The translation of memory into image comes as an alchemy that prompts viewers to question the stories we suggest to know. How do we mythologize our own histories? How would the darker truth change our personal perceptions? The photographs travel to the root of these questions, underscoring the fickle ways of memory and the long and possibly difficult road of learning and accepting one’s history.”
