How do you accept a disease process that you have no control over, and what is it like being a patient? In 2014, Tieleman was diagnosed with breast cancer. Using herself as a subject, she made the film ‘Hope’.
The film feels like a hushed, gradually moving photograph showing the changes to her breast over a period of various treatments. From mastectomy, through radiotherapy, to every step that eventually leads to the construction of a new breast. Tieleman’s work is not about the end result but about highlighting the process, life and constant change. Tieleman draws the viewer in to explore notions of gradualness, beauty and healing.
