Machine Sees More Than It Says
Mimi Ọnụọha exposes the imperfections and biases of technology by weaving together archive footage from the 1950s to the 1980s into a new visual narrative.
This results in a sketch, a story about a computer that perceives itself, evolving from processes such as extraction, technological advancement, and labour. The archive videos she encountered spontaneously seemed to share a common aesthetic and intent. For Ọnụọha, it appeared as though the digital tool wished to tell a story about itself, one that eludes us in our casual interactions with it. The work demonstrates how technology is not independent but shaped by human power structures.
