Munem Wasif - ARENA
With LAND OF UNDEFINED TERRITORY Munem Wasif questions the identity of a country, which within the concept of the nation-state is bound to a specific political and geographical context.
Wasif photographed an undefined stretch of land on the disputed border between India and Bangladesh. The slow, repeating image stops time for a moment, takes the viewer to another time, another space, which could also be anywhere. The work, which looks like a study, highlights the detachment from an apparently mundane area that is in reality fraught with politics and history. The presented part of Wasif’s ghostly series consists of three video channels.
