Malign Influences
Under the pressures of a very religious environment, Diego Moreno grew up in great confusion about his sexual orientation. He was an altar boy for twelve years as a child and is inspired by the apocalyptic vision of the Catholic Church. His identity became obscured by the prejudices and guilt of religious doctrine. Because of the constant rejection, the monstrous and the abnormal were the only concepts he felt at home with.
The project ‘Malign Influences’ consists of graphic interventions in Moreno’s family photo archive. By manually manipulating these photographs using coloured pencils, graphite, India ink, marker pens, oil and materials such as bleach or vinegar, he creates new realities, arising from his obsession and fascination with the abnormal. In this way, he is able to construct an alternative world without feelings of guilt, while paying homage to the family album. The protagonists in this project are the creatures in Moreno’s head, who manifest themselves in all their monstrosity: in their polyphony, they no longer allow themselves to be silenced.
