Well, we’ll ring each other up another day

In Ceola Tunstall-Behrens’ audio installation, recorded fragments from telephone conversations between a daughter and father are played in an empty corridor. Recorded over a year, while she resided in the Netherlands and her father in England, the notion of his presence is woven into the spatial installation through sound.

‘Well, we’ll ring each other up another day’ is an attempt to capture, forever, the essence of a loved one. It is an inquiry into how acoustics and voice can be used to create a body of space that simulates the experience of intimacy without the presence of the loved one. The work decentres our gaze from interactions that are visual and physical, to more ephemeral recognitions of each other.
