Rise and Fall
The underlying idea in Hindu mythology is that everything moves in cycles of creation and destruction. Often, the metaphor of the wave is used to visualise these cycles: the wave that emerges, sustains and breaks, over and over again. The ephemerality of a wave brings with it the idea of time and performance: it is a transient experience.
Jan Robert Leegte created the site-specific sound installation ‘Rise and Fall’ in commission of Artphy and Noorderlicht. The work will occupy a large part of the exhibition space. A grid of twelve speakers high up in the space forms the basis. Each speaker is controlled individually using live sound synthesis. Wandering through the space, the visitor experiences the sound of an ocean wave breaking and receding on the beach high above their heads. Powerful, monumental but also pleasant and soothing, and different every second. Little by little, however, an uncomfortable, even somewhat creepy feeling arises…
