Symposium Gender Matters with Mounir Samuel and Hester Scheurwater

The symposium is part of the ULYSSES European Odyssey project, of which Noorderlicht is the Dutch partner with Brave New World Producties. ULYSSES deals with the eighteen chapters from James Joyce’s controversial book of the same name, published over a hundred years ago. In Stationskwartier Leeuwarden, Noorderlicht and the Brave New World Producties organized two exhibitions on gender and sexual freedom as part of ULYSSES: Sex Shooter – The Liberation of Sexual Identity by Hester Scheurwater and Gender Matters: Stories from Istanbul by Gülen Güler. The exhibitions can still be visited up to and including Dec. 17.

On Friday 15 and Saturday 16 December, Slieker will also screen two films by two Turkish filmmakers as part of Gender Matters. Curator Gülen Güler (Yalan Dünya Films) will be present and the screenings will be introduced by project leaders Kees van der Meiden (Noorderlicht) & Claudia Woolgar (Brave New World Productions). Directors Gizem Aksu and Can Candan will give a Q&A. Tickets for the screenings are on sale here.

Symposium
This symposium provides a unique opportunity to learn more about current gender issues and the diverse perspectives of our renowned speakers. Following the presentations, there will be room for questions and discussion, as we strive for an open and inclusive dialogue.

Speakers:
1. Mounir Samuel: Writer, journalist and speaker on gender identity and diversity.
2. Gizem Aksu, Can Candan and Gülen Güler: Leading Turkish filmmakers who offer insight into gender issues from their cultural perspective.
3. Peter Rombouts: The issue in motion; Peter Rombouts gives a dance performance based on a gender issue.
4. Arjan Hut: Frisian poet who has written a poem especially for this symposium and will recite it.
