Pixel Perceptions: A Recap

We would like to thank you...

22 Jan 2025

Pixel Perceptions is over. The doors have closed and the rooms are being wound down. We look back at a successful exhibition, but we are far from done talking and watching when it comes to Artificial Intelligence and technology....

Can you still believe your own eyes?

In Pixel Perceptions, between 26 October 2024 and 19 January 2025, we looked at Artificial Intelligence, which is playing an increasingly large role our daily lives. This technology, which consists of algorithms that recognise patterns in large amounts of data, can now also generate new images, texts and sounds - from a simple shopping list to a ‘photographic’ portrait. While AI offers many new possibilities, it also raises critical questions about the reliability of images, the relationship between humans and machines, and AI's impact on photography and visual culture.

We investigated how AI affects our imaging and visual culture in both conscious and unconscious ways. More than 30 artists showed how AI depicts the world and how they respond to it in creative and critical ways. The exhibition became an exploration of the transformation of photographic viewing. We challenged visitors to look at AI with different eyes.

We did this with an exhibition, on view in the Akerk and at Noorderlicht, but also with an in-depth fringe programming called Digital Mirror. There were roundtable discussions with makers and curators, you could take an organised tour of the exhibition every Thursday, we gave various workshops, prompt battles and lectures.

Thank you!

We therefore look back on a successful exhibition. Our thanks go to all image-makers, curators, cooperation partners, our team, volunteers and, of course, you, the visitor!

Haven't you finished talking about Artificial Intelligence and technology either? Then we have good news, because we will continue talking, watching and exploring during our upcoming biennial: Machine Entanglements. Save the date!
