Noorderlicht Biennial: Machine Entanglements

Festival
12 Jul - 7 Sep 2025

The Noorderlicht Biennial 2025, titled Machine Entanglements, focuses on the complex relationship between technology, ecology and heritage and explores two themes. Connected Landscapes focuses on the intertwining of technology with natural and urban landscapes. Here it looks at topics such as the role of AI in food production, the impact of technological industries on nature and the dynamics of ecosystems.

The second theme, Heritage Futures, examines the impact of (colonial) heritage in contemporary contexts and how digital technology can contribute to understanding and revising these histories. At the same time, it critically examines how technology can reinforce or break down social inequalities and colonial structures.

Rapid technological developments have major implications for biodiversity, social structures and our heritage. With this biennial, Noorderlicht wants to create awareness and start a dialogue about how technology is shaping our lives and our world.

The biennial festively opens in the weekend of 12 and 13 July 2025. Mark that weekend in your diary and keep an eye on this page for updates and more information. Will you be there?
