Adventure
Over the next four years Noorderlicht will develop, in close cooperation with the BPD Cultuurfonds, a visual story that takes its cue from the narrative of gas extraction in the province of Groningen, the major and long-term impact on the safety and well-being of its residents, and not to forget the damage done to its characteristic landscape. Together with photographers, other image makers, authors and fellow institutions, we want to create a multifaceted artistic character sketch of a special province and, above all, highlight the possibilities and necessity of a transition to a different and fairer world.
This is not a fully-fledged programme, determined from A to Z. Nor is there a title to cover the topic. For the time being, we are calling it ‘The North in Transition’, but each part will come with its own title, angle and strength. Groningen, as an exploited territory, symbolises a universal and global story of neo-colonial thinking and unilateral profiteering.
Many subsidy schemes are so tightly sealed that it seems as if every risk must be excluded beforehand. This fits in with today’s world, in which creativity and adventure are frustrated by the almost compulsive need for 100% control and certainty. It is therefore a relief to embark on this artistic adventure with a fund that, along with a respectable financial contribution, is giving Noorderlicht complete freedom, trusting in its expertise.
