Wanted: Young Curators

For the next edition of the festival we are looking for two up-and-coming curators, or artists with curatorial ambitions. They will be coached by the festival team in creating an exhibition flanking the theme of the 28th edition of the festival: ‘The Makeable Mind’. The 2021 festival poses the question: How does modern visual culture affect our way of thinking? What influence does media communication, cultural representations, and mainstream and citizen journalism have on our perception of the world and how can visual culture disguise, describe, rewrite and expose our reality?

Young Curators mentorship programme
Through this programme, Noorderlicht aims to invest in emerging practices and share its experience and knowledge, while broadening its own perspective by introducing new voices. The selected curators will be encouraged to develop their own personal vision of the theme and take a multidisciplinary approach to explore new and diverse perspectives within their research, examining the boundaries of both photography and other lens-based media. They will work together as a team and will be guided throughout the process by the festival curators and the Noorderlicht team.

Practical information
The exhibition will take place from 7 August to 3 October 26 June 2021 in the Noorderlicht Studio, a 300 m2 exhibition space in the centre of Groningen. The Young Curators will be working for a period of four months from April 2021 to July 2021. Each curator will receive a fee of €1,500. Production costs, travel expenses and accommodation during the festival will be covered by the organisation. We welcome applications from emerging artists, curators and writers with an active, professional practice in the field of photography and/or other lens-based media. It is possible to apply for the programme as a duo. Noorderlicht values diversity and inclusion.

About Noorderlicht
Noorderlicht is an international photo festival and studio operating from Groningen, the Netherlands. The Noorderlicht International Photography Festival is an annual event that takes place alternately in Groningen and Friesland. From 2021 onwards, the festival will be a biennial for the three northern provinces of Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe.
