Collages (1970s-80s)

Oleksandr Suprun is best known for his experiments with photo collages. As Suprun grew up in the village of Berezovka near Kharkiv, the focus on the topics of rural life and landscape motifs became an essential part of his artistic identity.

The main protagonists of his collages are farmers, traders, kids, and elderly people, in other words, the characters typical for official Soviet photography as well. However, Suprun rejects idealizing them, showing their imperfect, plain, and sometimes grotesque characters.

Suprun created his collages over almost a quarter of a century, between 1974 and 1997, giving up on the technique after the digital photography became widespread.
