Photographer Fred Brommet (1924) was born in Groningen. After World War II he travelled from Amsterdam to Paris. There he learned the phototrade and built a florishing business, in reportage and later also studio photography. His images from that period are impressive: photos from everyday life as well as high-society, that remind us more of the work by someone like Robert Doisneau, and less of Dutch photography.

After the riots in 1968 his assigments came to a stand-still and he returned to the Netherlands, never to touch a camera again.

The Maria Austria Institute in Amsterdam maintains Brommet’s archive and curated this exhibition.
