I read, I write
Laura Boushnak’s long-term project ‘I Read I Write’ highlights the stories of women in Arab countries whose lives have been transformed by education. Motivated by her own experiences, her project interweaves the personal with the collective and explores the obstacles these inspiring women have overcome to get an education.

’I Read I Write’ began in 2009 with a report on female illiteracy in Arab countries. Boushnak embarked on a profound journey through six countries (Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia and Gaza) and into the daily lives of countless women. She portrayed women who have faced barriers to their education – from learning to read late in life to sidestepping family objections to pursuing their studies.
’I Read I Write’ introduces us to women who have broken through impasses and seized the smallest opening to reach the horizon of freedom, especially the freedom to choose.
