Gender Matters: Stories from Istanbul
Arts and cultural organizations from 18 cities European cities are jointly rewriting James Joyces' iconic and high-profile masterpiece Ulysses (1922) titled ULYSSES, European Odyssey. It is a new artistic translation of the book's 18 chapters, each with its own theme. Noorderlicht is the Dutch partner in this ambitious project, focusing on episode XIII from this classic European masterpiece, in which the theme of sexuality is central. Turkish film curator Gülen Güler has brought in a number of impressive films as part of the project.
Running parallel to ‘Sex Shooter – The Liberation of Sexual Identity’, the films will be on view in an exhibition setting titled “Gender Matters: Stories from Istanbul. These are composite images that include excerpts from director Can Canden’s moving documentary film My Child, in which parents of transgender children tell their stories.
