Eline Kersten creates layered stories about the deterioration of our natural environment and the changing landscape. The meaning we give to the landscape is coloured in many ways: historical, political, personal. Her film ‘Ur’ is a gentle meditation, a slow pan through Europe’s last primeval forest. Located on the border of Poland and Belarus, this Białowieża forest is a controversial natural heritage site whose future is under pressure from conflicting political interests.

The film’s soundtrack features the voices of those involved in the slow disappearance of the forest and the future of this place, ranging from the Polish government to ClientEarth lawyers and the European Commission. ‘Ur’ makes the death of a living organism tangible. This cinematic landscape was created in collaboration with scientists in various fields and other involved parties.
