White Robot Tears (Cry Me An Ocean)

Astria Suparak explores how Hollywood’s film industry perpetuates persistent biases in its portrayal of AI.

In science fiction films like Blade Runner and Ex Machina, intelligent robots, cyborgs, and AI systems are often humanised and depicted as White and emotionally complex. Asian actors are reduced to decorative background elements, such as adverts or holograms. Suparak exposes this illusion of diversity in her installation and poses the question in the video: who is granted the privilege of humanity in these futuristic worlds? The photos in the installation show White protagonists from a range of Hollywood science fiction films.
