Unknown Label
This video installation investigates the daily reality of online microworkers from Kenya, Venezuela and the Philippines.
The workers are hired by American and German car manufacturers to process and annotate images for the training of self-driving cars. Unknown Label reveals the asymmetries of power and neocolonial exploitation involved in this human labour, but also shows how microworkers find ways to unite and resist within this context. The installation exposes how these often invisible workers are essential to the training of AI systems, and so influence how machines perceive the world.
