Evidential

Evidential is a contemporary counterpart to the ground-breaking photobook Evidence by Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel (1977), in which the creators explored the meaning and claim of truth in images by weaving institutional photographs from industry and science into a new context.

Craig Ames reinterprets Evidence. The original photos are converted into textual descriptions by algorithms, which then serve as input for an AI system that generates images. With these new images, Ames creates narratives about technological progress, consumerism, and more. Evidential underscores that the question of the reliability of visual information is more relevant than ever, echoing the work of Sultan and Mandel.
