A.I. Interprets A.I. Interpreting ‘Against Interpretation’ (Sontag 1966)

With this installation, artist Jake Elwes questions the extent to which AI is truly capable of understanding images and texts. Susan Sontag’s essay ‘Against Interpretation,’ which criticizes the excessive interpretation of art, serves as the starting point of the work.

Elwes uses this as a prompt to generate images through AI. A second AI system then translates this image back into language. For this work, Elwes used the open-source image generator Disco Diffusion, and text generators GPT-2 and CLIP.
