Falaise (2016)

In Normandy, the white chalk cliffs are gradually being enveloped by the sea. This once celebrated travel destination – it is thought that Monet developed impressionism here – is now almost forgotten and in a continuous state of metamorphosis. Turning his back to the water, De Ridder focused his large-format camera on the details of the cliffs. To the human eye, the cliffs are pure white, but the eye of the camera is able to reveal hidden details. The cliffs begin to move; their surface becomes a painter’s canvas, the colours of which are captured by De Ridder’s slide film. ‘Falaise’ is an ode to the mysticism of the 140-million-year-old sediment.
