THE MISSING LINK (2013-2015)
In 2013, the genetic make-up of the male Neanderthal, which became extinct 39,000 years ago, was decoded. Since then scientists have been attempting to artificially reproduce this genome in a human stem cell, which could theoretically be implanted in a surrogate mother. The rebirth of the Neanderthal is therefore a serious possibility. In her series THE MISSING LINK, Ulrike Schmitz uses this idea as a starting point for a surreal reflection on our changing place in evolutionary history, from a passive follower of nature to an active creator, in which she depicts the scientific steps involved in recreating the Neanderthal.
