MARS: ADRIFT ON THE HOURGLASS SEA (2010-2012)
In MARS: ADRIFT ON THE HOURGLASS SEA, Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick depict a collapsed civilisation on Mars. Photographic mosaics of the Martian landscape, shot during NASA expeditions, are combined with own images of the deserts in Nevada and Utah. Two women and a child are shown in desperately impractical circumstances. The photographs are simultaneously futuristic and archaic, and portray an alien world. In doing so, the British-American duo refers to societies in crisis, where big changes are on the horizon. The DIY quality and the recycled nature of the materials used nevertheless give each photograph a familiar feel. Part of the work was made in commission for NASA.
