UNFOLD.ALT (2016)

UNFOLD is a sensual experience in image and sound, inspired by cosmology and astrophysics. Ryoichi Kurokawa worked in close collaboration with Vincent Minier, an astrophysicist affiliated with the Institute of Research into the Fundamental Laws of the Universe in Paris. Kurokawa was granted full access to the institute’s scientific data, including measurements made by the Herschel space telescope and simulations carried out by supercomputers. He took his inspiration from the research into star formation and the evolution of star clusters, over a timespan of ten billion years. Thanks to his probing images, the viewer comes eye to eye with the farthest reaches of the universe and the secrets of its origin – and by extension with his own beginnings. UNFOLD.ALT is the single screen version of the UNFOLD immersive installation.
