SITES OF SPECIAL SCIENTIFIC INTEREST (2008)

The Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) designates sites in the United Kingdom that are considered to be of special interest due to botanical, zoological or geological features. There are over six thousand such locations in the UK. The formal notification of such a site includes that which is of special scientific interest and a map showing the boundaries of the site. In some cases, the boundaries of the SSSIs are even literally fenced off. Edmund Clark sees taking a photo of this as a reflection, a new act of classification: the frame of the photo gives meaning to the elements arranged within it, as a cartographic boundary of an SSSI, thus contributing to our visual knowledge.
