CHEATING THE MOON (2014-2016)
Between 1969 and 1972, six Apollo missions took 832 kilos of material from the moon back to Earth. The moon rocks were a much-loved gift from President Nixon’s administration to royal families and government leaders. However, of the 270 moon rocks that Nixon gave away, 180 are now missing. Over the years a practice of falsification, theft and extortion has arisen around the moon rocks. A moon rock given to the Netherlands has also disappeared: in 2009, the original turned out to have been swapped for a piece of petrified wood. In CHEATING THE MOON, Annabel Elgar takes on the role of detective in search of the stories around the moon rocks, in which she freely interprets the facts. Parallel to the criminal practices surrounding the moon rocks, the truth of the various locations and circumstances presented remains a mystery.
