Sustainability - Zaailand 3
The Lexicon of Sustainability reads as an informal, grassroots, peer to peer manual on how to live more sustainable and to survive in times of the food crises that are set to come, while at the same time introducing in highly personal terms those already engaged in alternative, local farming methods.
Douglas Gayeton, a restless and irreverent spirit, along with his wife, Laura Howard, directs the Lexicon of Sustainability, a multimedia project in which he utilizes a technique he calls ‘flat film’, where hundreds of images are used to compose a single image. On these, handwritten texts are added, detailing the insights and observations from the people involved, and illuminating every possible question viewers might ask about what is in the photograph.
The Lexicon project consists of three sections: the finished part on Food & Farming is presented here, while sections on Water and Energy are currently under development. The Lexicon is usually installed in community venues, in a setup where everyone can apply to be a curator and create pop-up shows.
