Anorak
His family has no traditions. Yet, his region is full of them. Dutch artist Daniël Siegersma never really thought about this when he was growing up. It was the way it was. The decorations in his house were relics of his ancestors, mainly there to commemorate them as people. The relics belonged to a rural tradition, primarily practiced in the Dutch region of Twente and partly over the border with Germany.
Still, seeing those relics as a kid made his curiosity about these rural manifestations rise. The relics itself became a form of latent traditions he tried to be involved in. In his installation ‘Anorak’ he asks: are we by default participants of our regional traditions or do we need to deserve it by action? And what does the majority of the country know about these regional traditions and is that important in a society with growing differences between city and countryside?
