A Speculative Present (2018-ongoing)

In ‘A Speculative Present’, Frederik Heyman explores the tense relationship between humans and technology and humanity’s desire to conquer. He uses photogrammetry to stage digital worlds with ancient relics. By incorporating mechanically controlled movements and timed text into 3D scans, he creates an immersive digital world.

Scenes seem to live on endlessly without beginning or end, showing situations in which human bodies are connected to complex-looking machines. They are dystopian tableaus and the viewer can only speculate who is in control.

Heyman’s images, whether based on fact or fiction, prompt us to question how we want to remember ourselves. For Heyman, the 3D scan is not only a means of preserving the past, but also of reliving the present and shaping the future.
