Starting from a 1941 sound recording by photographer Paul Julien, an intriguing story unfolds in “Around Us It Becomes Night”. This lecture should have been broadcast on January 26. This was a month after the sale of Julien’s first book had started with great success, but also a few weeks before the first razzia’s, in which Jewish Dutchmen were rounded up and deported by the German occupier.

Julien’s radio lecture deals with the violence that got out of hand in Sierra Leone at the end of the nineteenth century. Andrea Stultiens explains how the Dutch and Sierra Leonean parallel histories can be understood in our time. In addition to the historical sound recording, she uses different types of images to support her story. The performance offers a unique perspective on the work shown in the exhibition.

Hue Blanes, who studies spoken text in music, will do the same here with fragments of Paul Julien’s lecture. Henri de Boer connects the image fragments, the spoken word and the music with percussion, making everything even more tangible.
