Bellingcat – Truth in a Post-Truth World
In times when even governments are throwing fake news into the world to create confusion and doubt, it's getting more complicated to uncover the truth. While the well-known news outlets still check the facts through their own regular sources, savvy internet users are discovering that they can do it themselves.
Who can we still believe today?
‘Bellingcat – Truth in a Post-Truth World’ follows an international team of citizen journalists who use their knowledge of social media, reconstruction techniques and audio analysis to conduct in-depth research. To the MH17 disaster, for example, via Google Earth, dashcam images and Facebook profiles. Or to the abuses in Syria, where videos are carefully checked for authenticity, and then stored in a large database for possible future lawsuits. Director Hans Pool explains everything crystal clear through interviews that are full of intriguing and topical examples. With Dutch subtitles.
Introduction Paulien Dresscher
The festival curator of the Noorderlicht International Photo Festival 2021 finds the way in which Bellingcat uses the world of social media and online sources – as a mirror of reality and beyond fake news – inspiring. As a citizen journalism network, Bellingcat encourages us to look behind the issues of the day, exactly what Noorderlicht is aiming for with this years festival theme ‘The Makeable Mind’.
