Naturalia (2020)

In 2017 Massimiliano Rossetto moved from a small, rural Swiss village to Berlin. He noticed that living in the big city hugely impacted his mental health, because of the lack of nature. In that very same year, he started his series ‘Naturalia’, in which he looks for flora, fauna and elements in his daily city life that evoke memories of the nature in his home village. ‘Naturalia’ thus became a geological portrait of what he sees, feels and experiences. His story combines a dystopian reality with an ode to nature and seeks a balance between the two.

In his work, the Swiss visual artist focuses primarily on memories related to landscapes. He searches for a sense of connection in places that have been affected by artificial and natural artefacts, places that have been built on, destroyed or altered by human activity. By sensitively approaching topics that are connected between the past and present, he utilizes these elements to compose his photographic practice, that encompasses site specific and ephemeral visual installations.
