Making Oneself
-
Keep the Best of Your Life
Making Oneself is a twofold exhibition of both historical investigations and contemporary showcases of photo studio practises in South and Southeast Asia and Uganda, incorporating archival material from the (colonial) past with present-day social and political contextualisation. The exhibition explores the process of cultural adoption and adaptation of photographic portrait traditions through the course of history in the respective regions.
Keep the Best of Your Life
In the Keep the Best of Your Life section, artist Andrea Stultiens showcases the ways in which Ugandans have presented and are presenting themselves, through a selection of images from the collection of History in Progress Uganda (a digitalisation and sharing photo platform, which she started with Rumanzi Canon in 2011) and the work of contemporary Ugandan photographers.
Postcolonial Photo Studio
In the Postcolonial Photo Studio section, photo historian Alexander Supartono showcases how photo studio concepts and techniques from the colonial era are reflected in the work of photographers from postcolonial countries in South and Southeast Asia.
