Noorderlicht at World Expo 2025 in Japan!
In the lead-up to Machine Entanglements, the 30th edition of the Noorderlicht Biennial which opens on 12 July 2025 in the Netherlands, we’re kicking off the theme internationally.

From 18 April to 12 May 2025, Noorderlicht will be on view at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai in Japan, by invitation of the NIeuwe Instituut. The World Expo carries the theme Common Ground: creating a new dawn together – an invitation to rethink connection, progress, and our collective future.
As part of the Re-thinking Innovation showcase in the Dutch Pavilion, we present work by three makers: Anouk Kruithof, Špela Petrič, and the collective Telemagic.
The overarching expo theme aligns seamlessly with the ideas explored in Machine Entanglements. Petrič reclaims imagery from a tomato-scanning robot to reflect on the relationship between technology and nature. Anouk Kruithof presents a video work on fluid identities between humans, plants, and machines. And Telemagic uses a playful robot to show how deeply AI is entangled with energy, labor, and our environment.
With this international kick-off, we launch a festive anniversary edition, which will fully unfold from July onward across multiple locations in the Northern Netherlands.
Location: Dutch Pavilion, World Expo 2025, Osaka, Japan
Dates: 18 April – 12 May (Friday to Monday)
