The Double Face of Progress

Here in the former Niemeyer factory—once a proud symbol of Groningen’s industrial progress—Machine Entanglements also explores the shadow side of technological innovation. In a space steeped in labour and production, artists pose critical questions and activate their imagination: what if technology is not merely a tool for acceleration, control or extraction, but also a chance to repair, reconnect, and unearth forgotten histories?

As data, infrastructures and ecosystems become increasingly entangled, the image-makers here reveal how technology shapes hidden processes, society, and even our own imagination. Some works in this part of the biennale expose the concealed extraction behind the polished surface of digital innovation. Others search for new ways of co-existing with technology, where it doesn’t dominate, but listens to the earth, the plants, and other beings.

Within this industrial setting, a new vision of the future begins to unfold: a world where creativity, technological systems, and ecological networks are brought back into balance—not from a desire for control, but from a sense of connection.
