Noorderlicht Biennial: Machine Entanglements

Festival
12 Jul - 7 Sep 2025

The 2025 edition of the Noorderlicht Biennial explores the intricate relationship between technology, ecology, and heritage. Rapid technological advancements have a profound impact on biodiversity, social structures, and our shared history. With Machine Entanglements, Noorderlicht aims to raise awareness and spark dialogue: how does technology shape our lives, our landscapes, and our collective memory?

The festive opening takes place during the weekend of July 11, 12, and 13, 2025. Mark your calendar and keep an eye on this page for updates and more information.

From Japan to Drenthe

Noorderlicht aims to raise awareness and spark dialogue with Machine Entanglements: how does technology shape our lives and our environment? Visitors are invited to reflect on their own position within these technological transitions. Roosje Klap, director of Noorderlicht, explains: “This anniversary edition offers a necessary reflection on the world we live in. The works reveal just how deeply technology permeates our daily lives.”

At six locations across the Northern Netherlands – de Niemeyerfabriek, het Tschumipaviljoen, Museum Dr8888, Museum Belvédère, Brouwerij Fortuna en De Proef – the participating artists each present a unique perspective on how technology shapes our world.
