Experience Exposed
"To me it is more human to show strength, than it is to show misery and dependency", Mladen Pikulic said upon publication of the book 'Sarajevo Self Portrait' (2000) in which he featured images of children in his former homeland, torn by civil wars.
Such strength and independency also characterise the photographs he took over the past years in De Schildershoek, an intercultural home for the elderly in The Hague. Here Pikulic recorded everyday life, with a sharp eye for small, often symbolic details. It resulted in a series of penetrating photographs – at times confronting but always with great compassion.
