De Nederlands Bakbrommer Almanak 2014
‘Mopeds are mopeds with three wheels and a bucket at the front. In the past these belonged to bakers, herring farmers and scrap iron touts, but today an innovative free-spirited, bold, noisy subculture has really formed around these handy mopeds. The mopeds have acquired a Robin Hood-like character here in society and thus fit perfectly at home in a cool adventure book, but one that actually happened and just here in the meadows and cities of the Netherlands.’
After the Noorderlicht edition Grote Verhalen from 2009, the intrepid life artist Mathieu Keuter continues his way into a wonderful world of gangsters and squatters, of reggae, graffiti and other rough matters. In De Nederlandse Bakbrommer Almanak 2014 he portrays the subculture around the bakmoped in his recognizable collage-like style.
‘A project in which, while compiling a historical document, research is done into the properties of (documentary) photography to legendize moments and events, about how photography can obscure and even recreate reality and events from the past, about the power of the preciousness and how images can become icons.’
De Grote Onvolledige Nederlandse Bakbrommer Almanak 2014 will be published to accompany this exhibition, in a limited edition of 50. The book is now sold out!
