The power of visual language

21 May 2024

What is visual language? How aware are we of it and how important is it for creators? In our latest podcast episode, we discuss this in depth with Okki Poortvliet and Reyer Boxem. Host Joost Wierenga shares this year's podcast studio with artists, curators, researchers and experts and this time dives into the world of imagery and visual language.

Okki Poortvliet is a (documentary) filmmaker, audiovisual artist, and illustrator. She grew up in a small village in the north of the Netherlands. There she shot her graduation film in 2021 for Minerva art academy: IJswee (longing for ice). Since then, she has made 6 films that all share an anthropological, experimental, and quirky character.

Reyer Boxem has been a photographer since 1994. He is mainly active in the north of the country, working for magazines such as Revu, Elsevier Weekblad, De Groene Amsterdammer, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Dagblad Trouw, Noorderbreedte (where he is also image editor) and the University of Groningen newspaper.
