Culture in the Niemeyerfabriek

16 Apr 2024

Kunstpunt Groningen, Noorderlicht, GRID Graphic Museum Groningen, NOORDWOORD, the resort and the Poetry Palace present a plan for a new cultural hotspot in Groningen. The six cultural institutions have been working on a unique collaboration plan for some time and see in the Niemeyerfabriek a wonderful opportunity to realise more culture for even more audiences.

In the main hall, visitors from the neighbourhood see how an exhibition of top photographers from the northern Netherlands is being finalised. Meanwhile, a group of students walk to the education room for a poetry workshop. In the Graphics Lab, students from Noorderpoort and Minerva are at work with printing machines and new, digital techniques, and in the library visitors browse through beautifully designed books. At the Art Loan, someone is picking out new work, while a staff member hangs up posters: there is another Cultural Café on Sunday afternoon. A writer and a visual artist, working in one of the indoor studios, come to talk about their joint project.

If it is up to Groningen’s six cultural institutions, this vision of the future will soon become reality. Kunstpunt Groningen, Noorderlicht, GRID Grafisch Museum Groningen, NOORDWOORD, the resort and the Poëziepaleis are convinced that they can offer city and society more by cleverly linking their programmes. With this in mind, they took the initiative several years ago to achieve cooperation, joint accommodation and the creation of a new cultural hotspot. The plans are now at an advanced stage. In the Niemeyerfabriek, they see the right location to realise their plans. These plans have been presented to the municipality of Groningen and the project developer involved in recent weeks.

The six cultural institutions have a proven track record and the new cultural hotspot will be much more than a place where they present their own programme. Sharing facilities such as a reception hall, a workshop and an exhibition space, as well as collaborating on content, will create a vibrant and versatile place where there is always something to do. Strong ties, short lines of communication and intensive cooperation with educational institutions and the business community create a cultural hub where you experience, learn and work. Whether you are a culture vulture, local resident, student or creator: this house of imagination is for everyone.

A versatile programme and jointly organised events will attract a large and diverse audience: the partners count on more than 100,000 visitors on an annual basis. Accommodation in the Niemeyerfabriek will thus bring life to the area and add value to a rapidly developing district. It will be the place for new ideas, unexpected encounters and exciting views. For those who live around the corner or just a bit further away.
