Noorderlicht is looking for things to sit on!

21 Jun 2021

What object do you use to sit? As part of the installation ‘Sorting Song’ bij Swiss artist Simone Niquille at Noorderlicht Photo Festival, we are asking you to lend us your favorite thing to sit on, to create a small collection of sitting objects. It will be displayed for the duration of the installation in the Tschumi Pavillion, from July 10 to August 29, 2021.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Computer Vision is the technology that teaches cameras what they are looking at. It is a robots eyes and brain and helps it navigate and understand the world. To create computer vision, large amounts of data are collected, sorted and labelled by likeness. To teach a robot what a chair is, many kinds of digital chairs are collected. But what is a chair really? Is it a piece of furniture with a platform and four legs? Or is it an object to sit on? If that is the case, can a carpet also be a chair, a toilet, a bed, a stone? The data collected to teach robots about the world is limited to what is available. The real world is more complex though and not as neatly organized.

JOIN US IN EXPLORING THE CATEGORY CHAIR! WHAT DO YOU USE TO SIT?
Please bring your favorite thing to sit om to Noorderlicht Studio. We are open for that purpose on Monday July 5 and Tuesday July 6 at Noorderlicht Studio, from 1 to 5 pm. Please inform us first at productie@noorderlicht.com. Of course you get your stuff back, plus a nice gift.
