About Lasse Hoile
Lasse Hoile (Denmark) is a renowned photographer, filmdirector and cinematographer. Using mixed media and intertwining vintage style with a modern-day twist, Hoile is best known for his close collaborative work with musician Steven Wilson, whose projects include Porcupine Tree and Blackfield. Hoile works with several musicians like Anathema, Steve Rothery (Marillion), and Opeth. In this exhibition, Noorderlicht shows a selection of Lasse Hoile’s photographs, mixed media works, and collages in addition to the film Insurgentes – a documentary exploring the curiosity of an artist and his desire to travel the world in search of inspiration to create music. Influenced by melancholic music as well as Francis Bacon, David Lynch and Andrei Tarkovsky, Lasse Hoile taps into the human psyche. He creates stark depictions of reality that often convey a sense of emotional struggle. Faces are wrapped, hidden, obscured. Lone, distorted figures travel through a desolate landscape. Vintage-style erotica is given a shamanistic touch. Seduction and repulsion go hand in hand. Hoile’s cinematic language pulls the viewer in, and then cleverly leaves us to our own devices.
