John Max
About John Max
John Max (1936-2011), was a Canadian photojournalist, photography teacher and fine art photographer. He studied painting with Arthur Lismer and music at the McGill Conservatory of Music before discovering photography in the late 1950s through Lutz Dille, whose work was heavily influenced by Europeans such as Cartier-Bresson, Kertész and Doisneau. As an autodidact, Max then completed his training with Guy Borremans and Nathan Lyons. He is known for his use of narrative sequence, his expressive portraits and his intensely personal, subjective approach to photography.
