Derek Shapton

Derek Shapton studied photography at Toronto’s Humber College, painting and drawing at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and philosophy and religion at the University of Toronto. Despite earning top marks in his studies, he quit school to pursue photography full time in 1998.
His personal projects (including those of his Instagram alter-ego @thunder_pino), focus on documentary landscape work with an emphasis on urbanization and the built environment. He is particularly interested in tourism and it’s role as a mode of “new colonialism” — specifically the impact of visitors on landscapes both urban and rural.
