The Iranian-born photographer Abbas (1944) made his name with the book La Révolution Confisquée (1980) in which he reported on the revolution in his native land. Since 1981 he has been connected with the famous photo agency Magnum and continues to follow his established themes – political violence, religious fanaticism and mass ideologies. In previous reportages he coverd the war in Vietnam, apartheid in South Africa, the Islamic revolution in Iran, and the resurgence os Islamism throughout the world. One result of this project was his 1994 book Allah O Akbar, A Journey through Militant Islam.
