Halmang

Halmang was filmed on the coast of Jeju, near a shrine for the wind goddess Yongdeung Halmang; on the island ‘halmang’ means both goddess and grandmother. The film follows eight women in their seventies and eighties who spent their lives working together as haenyeo, also known as free-divers. The camera follows their hands as they knot long white cotton cloths into a spiral around the black lava rocks: knowledge that is embodied and passed from mother to daughter.
