The Hands of Sally Mann

Koos Breukel, The Hands of Sally Mann, 2008, photo

Breukel made a close-up portrait of photographer Sally Mann’s hands: no face, just the two hands, stained and dark from the work. Mann photographs with large cameras and old, labour-intensive processes, with chemicals in the darkroom and close to the earth. The stains tell what a face would hide, and in this way a portrait of hands becomes the portrait of photography itself, of the physical work behind every image.
